A Sensational Selection of Surf Hostels
In last month’s newsletter, we featured a roundup of the world’s best beaches, so we thought it was about time we did something for the more energetic beach-goer: a selection of surf hostels.
Scattered all over the world, some of these surf hostels are in out of the way locations, others in big cities; some of the places below offer surfing lessons, while others do board hire. But one thing they all have in common is that they give backpackers access to the very best surfing beaches around!
 Macumba Beach: One of the best surf beaches around
Rio Surf n’ Stay is a surf hostel through and through: As well as being just an idle stone’s throw from one of the best surf beaches around – Macumba Beach – they offer board hire and surfing lessons (for all levels) in a very cool, laidback setup.

 Marvelous Margaret River
Bondi Beach and Surfers Paradise are right up there, but when it comes to some of the best surfing in Australia, Margaret River is the place to be. What’s more, the nearby orchards of Donnybrook are also a great place to get fruit picking work to earn some extra cash to fund all the surfing!

 City surf at Surf City Good city surf can be pretty hard to come by, which is what makes Surf City Hostel such a tempting proposition. You can spend all day surfing the waves that crash on Hermosa Beach, and then party like a rock star in the bars and clubs that line the seafront!

 Awesome waves at Punta Hermosa, Peru
The best thing about this surf camp, set back off the famous surfing beach of Punta Hermosa, is what you get for the price: meals, transport and awesome waves. Being a great surf spot – as they put it, “Punta Hermosa is a surfers’ town” – it’s a friendly and pretty seriously chilled out place.

 The crashing surf of Blouberg Beach Surfing lodges are usually pretty basic affairs. But SaltyCrax is positively luxurious (it even has its own pool!) As well as great nearby surfing beaches like Blouberg, SaltyCrax also helps backpackers get out on the ocean in a sailing boat, amongst a host of other water sports activities.

 Sunset from St Christopher’s Given that it’s got some of the best surfing in Cornwall (and thus in the British Isles), it’s hardly surprising that Newquay’s got a couple of great surfing hostels. But, looking out over the waves rolling in to Towan Beach, St Christopher’s could hardly be more spectacularly located.

 The stunning Playa Santa Teresa Cuesta Arriba Hostel is one of the more invitingly located surf hostels around. Surrounded by lush palm trees (adorned with swinging hammocks), it gives onto the stunning Playa Santa Teresa. Just off the shore, meanwhile, the ‘La Lora’ break offers some of the best surfing in Costa Rica.
